Air Algerie is to acquire 10 Boeing 737 Max 8 jets as part of a fleet modernisation programme.
The flag-carrier is to begin taking delivery of the aircraft in July, with the initial five set to arrive this year.
Its remaining aircraft will be delivered the following year, according to an airline statement carried by the official state news agency APS.
Air Algerie is taking the aircraft to support a directive of the Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at developing civil air transport in the country.
The company believes the aircraft will enhance competitiveness and consolidate its position, according to the statement.
Air Algerie already has a fleet of 737-800s as well as a few examples of other 737 variants.
Boeing lists an order for eight 737 Max jets from May 2023, following an agreement by the carrier to take Max 9s.
These aircraft have yet to be delivered. It is unclear whether the 10 Max 8s are supplemental or represent an adjustment to the previous order.
