A pair of incidents this week highlight the importance of collision avoidance technologies and crew vigilance. In Nashville, a pair of Southwest 737s crossed paths with just 500 feet of vertical separation after one of the aircraft was turned into the the path of the other by air traffic control. In New York, an Republic Airways E175 overshot the turn to JFK’s Runway 31L, flying closer to Jazz Aviation E175 on approach to the parallel Runway 31R. In both cases, each aircraft received a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System Resolution Advisory.
Nashville
On 18 April, Southwest Airlines flight 507 was on approach to Nashville’s runway 02L while Southwest flight 1152 was departing Runway 02R. Southwest 507 conducted a go-around and was directed to turn right by air traffic control. This turn put the aircraft on a possible collision course with Southwest 1152. Both aircraft responded to TCAS RAs, safely deconflicting their paths and continuing for safe landings.

New York
On 20 April, American Eagle (Republic Airways) flight 4464 was cleared for the approach to New York-JFK’s Runway 31L while Air Canada Express (Jazz Aviation) flight 8554 was cleared for Runway 31R. The Republic E175 was required to make a left turn to join the final approach, but the turn took the aircraft closer to the Jazz E175 that it should have. Both aircraft again responded to TCAS RAs and conducted go-arounds, landing safely on the second approach.
Yesterday, AA4464 was cleared to land RWY31L at JFK, while AC8554 was cleared 31R. AA4464’s turn to runway heading brought it close enough to AC8554 that both aircraft responded to TCAS RAs and went around. The flights landed safely a short time later. pic.twitter.com/7yZTsb2pzX
