Delta Air Lines is set to add a new route to California from Austin, just one day after the airline cut its services to Memphis and New Orleans. The new route will be served with an Airbus A319 aircraft and will operate daily between the two cities, commencing operations on October 6.
The addition of San Jose comes at the cost of losing two non-stop services to Memphis (served daily), which ends on November 1, and New Orleans (also served daily), which will operate until October 5. New Orleans will return with a four-weekly service between November 12 and November 16, according to Aeroroutes.
Non-Stop Daily Flights From Austin To San Jose
Delta’s decision to add a non-stop link to Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport(SJC), will kick off from October 6, with the airline’s schedule outlining it will depart from Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in the morning as DL3128, with a 9:45 AM departure. The total flight time west will be around three hours and 30 minutes.
Return flights will push back from the gate at San Jose after lunch, for an early evening arrival back into Austin. The plane operating the flight, an Airbus A319-100, can seat up to 132 passengers across three classes: 12 in Delta First, 18 in Delta Comfort, and 102 in Main Cabin. Detailed flight schedule below as per Aeroroutes:
Flight Number | From | To | Departure Time | Arrival Time | Flight Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
DL3128 | Austin (AUS) | San Jose (SJC) | 9:45 AM | 11:35 AM | 3h30m |
DL3128 | San Jose (SJC) | Austin (AUS) | 12:30 PM | 6:00 PM | 3h25m |
Simple Flying reached out to Delta for comment on the new route and the suspension of two others and received the following response:
“Delta will discontinue its nonstop service between Austin and Memphis, and Austin and New Orleans, to better align with demand. The final flights will operate on Oct. 5, 2026. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are reaching out directly to affected customers.”
Direct Competition From Two Other Major US Carriers
Delta’s decision to add services to San Jose will face direct competition on the route from two other major US carriers.
American Airlines already services the route, being the only full-service carrier operating the city pair.
Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest low-cost carrier and operator of the Boeing 737, also connects the two cities.
According to data from the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the route to San Jose is not in the top ten from Austin. The grouping of both
San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK), and San Jose (SJC) for services to the greater San Francisco Bay area positions the region as a key market for airlines from Austin.
Airlines currently serving San Francisco from Austin include Delta, Southwest, and
United Airlines, while Oakland is served exclusively by Southwest.

Memphis And New Orleans Lose A Non-Stop Link To Austin
As already mentioned, the news of new non-stop services to San Jose comes at the same time the Atlanta-based airline announces it will axe its services from Austin to Memphis International Airport (MEM) and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). Currently served daily with the Embraer E175, the suspension of these flights will come as a blow to the Texan airport.
This will leave Southwest Airlines as the only airline providing non-stop services between Austin and Memphis, with its budget services kicking off from October 1. Southwest will also be the only airline offering non-stop services from Austin to New Orleans, which the airline already operates with its fleet of 737.
Delta remains the second-largest airline operating to Austin, following Southwest, with BTS showing that the airline’s mainline services account for a 15% share of all airport operations, less than half of that of Southwest, which demands 42% of all operations. Year-round Delta operates to Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York–JFK, Orlando, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Jose (CA), Seattle/Tacoma, and Tampa, while seasonal services are added internationally to Cancun and San Jose del Cabo.
Delta Connection flies from Austin to Cincinnati, Columbus–Glenn, Denver, Indianapolis, Jacksonville (FL), Kansas City, McAllen, Memphis, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Nashville, New Orleans, Panama City (FL), Phoenix–Sky Harbor, Raleigh/Durham, and Salt Lake City, with seasonal services to Asheville, Bozeman, Glacier Park/Kalispell, and Palm Springs.
