WASHINGTON — A routine runway departure turned into an unexpected family reunion in the skies when a father and daughter, both commercial airline pilots, crossed paths on the same radio frequency at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
The heartwarming interaction unfolded as the father, piloting United Airlines Flight 108, was coordinating with Air Traffic Control (ATC) ahead of takeoff. Mid-conversation, a familiar voice piped up over the active frequency with a single word: “Pops?”
It was his daughter, piloting CommutAir Flight 4977 (operating as a United Express regional flight), who instantly recognized her father’s voice through the headset static. Surprised, the father asked where she was on the airfield. She responded that she was holding on Runway 1R, positioned right nearby and ready to depart.
Hearing the sweet interaction, a fellow pilot on the frequency couldn’t help but chime in, asking, “Is that your daughter? You should be a proud papa!” The father lightheartedly confirmed, smiling as the banter escalated into a hilarious interrogation about her living arrangements and phone bill:
