Avianca Cargo’s European operations have achieved Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certification as it continues to target growth in the pharma sector.
The certification, which is based on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the distribution of medicines, covers the airline’s facilities in Madrid and Barcelona.
The certificate was awarded by SGS, an independent certification body, and verifies that the airline meets WHO guidelines for handling, storing, distributing and transporting pharmaceuticals and other health care products while maintaining their quality and integrity throughout the supply chain.
The company has also achieved IATA’s CEIV Pharma certification.
Avianca Cargo chief executive Diogo Elias said: “Becoming the first airline in the Americas to earn GDP Pharma certification for our operations in Madrid and Barcelona marks a new milestone in our strategy to strengthen our specialised pharmaceutical transport services.
“Together with our IATA CEIV Pharma certification, this achievement reinforces our commitment to an industry that depends on safe, consistent and traceable operations.”
The airline said it had achieved certification in six months, compared with the 12 months it typically takes to complete the audit process.
“This certification reinforces Avianca Cargo’s commitment to its customers and strengthens its ability to meet the pharmaceutical industry’s needs. Madrid and Barcelona serve as strategic hubs for consolidating pharmaceutical shipments from across Europe,” the airline added in a press release.
“Both cities are part of a network that gives Avianca Cargo greater control over its operations and enables it to offer a specialized, reliable supply chain connected to major markets.”
By 2027, the airline hopes to extend GDP Pharma certification to strategic stations in London, Paris and Lisbon.
