The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s board of commissioners authorized $110 million toward expanding Newark Liberty International Airport’s (EWR) Terminal A, the $2.7 billion facility that opened in 2023.
The Port Authority said the terminal was designed to handle 13 million annual passengers, but is already seeing passenger numbers of around 18 million per year. The 1-million-ft.2 terminal currently has 33 gates. An additional eight gates are now planned.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said Terminal A has “shattered passenger forecasts.” He noted the terminal was built to allow for future growth, which the Port Authority believes is already needed.
The newly approved funds include $100 million to finance the construction of two new gates and a new concession area in the southern end of the terminal. The project will grow Terminal A by 250,000 ft.2 with a targeted completion in 2029.
The remaining $10 million in authorized funds goes toward planning for a second project to add six gates to the northern end of EWR’s Terminal A. That project will be done in phases with an envisioned partial opening in 2030 and a full opening in 2032.
A price tag for the second project has not been determined. “The agency will work to develop cost estimates, construction phasing and other supporting activities ahead of an anticipated project authorization in 2027,” the Port Authority said.
The Port Authority manages EWR as well as New York John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.
