FAA mechanic certificates hit a record. The shortage isn't over.

Aircraft values, charter demand and new deliveries continue to grab the headlines, but an aircraft that is AOG awaiting maintenance is what grabs an operator’s attention. Which is why the 2026 Pipeline Report from ATEC and Oliver Wyman offers some encouraging data for Part 135 and 91 fleets that continue to grow. The report found that FAA-issued mechanic certificates reached a record high in 2025. A total of 11,103 certificates were issued, which is 23.2% more than in 2024 and the highest annual total since the agency began publishing the data. This was driven largely by growth at aviation maintenance schools and increased participation through alternative workforce pathways. The report claims that the outlook for 2026 is even better, providing evidence that industry efforts to expand the technician pipeline are producing measurable results. When maintenance shops are overloaded, owners often see longer waits for inspections, reduced scheduling flexibility, higher labor rates and more downtime. A growing technician pipeline should eventually help ease those pressures, but the key word is eventually. While the increase in certificates suggests the industry is moving in the right direction, capacity is still restrained. The problem is timing. Technicians are being added at the same time as a large portion of the workforce is nearing retirement. According to the report, 44% of certificated mechanics are now over age 60, with more than 39,000 retirements expected over the next decade. That push/pull dynamic helps explain why maintenance availability remains tight despite the best technician-production numbers seen in years. For aircraft owners, the number to watch may not be how many certificates are issued each year, but whether those gains translate into shorter wait times, greater maintenance availability and improved aircraft uptime.
