Spirit Airlines, the long-struggling ultra low-cost carrier, which twice declared bankruptcy within the last 14 months, has ceased operations following failure to secure government backing. The airline had been seeking a $500 million rescue package from the US government, as well as part of a $2.5 billion fuel guarantee requested by an association of low-coast airlines. The airline operated a fleet of approximately 100 aircraft over the past month, while sending many aircraft into storage over the past year.
Spirit Airlines flight NK1833 operated by Airbus A320-232 N604NK is believed to be the final flight.

Recent history
Spirit Airlines’ recent history has marked by dramatic upswings and just as quick downfalls. Failed consolidation attempts and repeated financial distress led Spirit to where it is today. In 2022, Spirit first agreed to merge with Frontier, a fellow ultra low cost carrier, but that deal collapsed when Spirit terminated the merger agreement in July 2022 after JetBlue outbid Frontier.
A federal judge then blocked the deal between Spirit and JetBlue in January 2024 on antitrust grounds, with JetBlue walking away. After the failed mergers, Spirit’s financial problems deepened, with a first Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2024. The airline emerged from restructuring in March 2025, but refiled for Chapter 11 on August 29, 2025, marking its second bankruptcy in less than a year.
In recent weeks, thanks in part to the skyrocketing cost of fuel, Spirit’s position became fraught, with the airline seeking lending guarantees from the federal government. President Donald Trump appeared amenable to a $500 million rescue package, while Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy worked to secure an airline merger partner. But in the end, the structure of the potential deal—and the fact that Spirit’s pieces are worth more than the whole—led to the cessation of operations.
Spirit’s route network

As an ultra low-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines focused on secondary cities as gateways to vacation destinations. Flights carried passengers to their hub in Florida, as well destinations in the Caribbean and South America. Flights to leisure destinations like Las Vegas and Atlantic City also played a major role in the airline’s operations.
The Spirit fleet
As part of its restructuring Spirit has been shrinking its fleet, sending aircraft into storage or returning them to their lessors in places like Victorville in California and Marana and Goodyear in Arizona. Over the past 30 days, Spirit has operated a total of 96 aircraft (not including those flown to storage). Aircraft in the fleet that have operated within 30 days of 1 May 2026 are listed below. Those aircraft will likely also move to storage facilities in short order.
