Regional jet had been operating service to Fredericton from Toronto.
Canadian investigators state that a Jazz Aviation regional jet was conducting an approach to Fredericton in gusting winds when it sustained a wing-tip strike on landing.
The aircraft, an MHIRJ CRJ900 had been arriving from Toronto on 28 April.
It had been descending to Fredericton’s runway 09 in visual conditions, with a right crosswind from 150° at 8kt, gusting to 16kt, says the Transportation Safety Board.
The crew initiated a go-around, it states in a bulletin.
“During the initial part of the go-around, the aircraft banked left,” it adds.
“The left main landing-gear contacted the runway surface, and the left wing-tip struck the runway.”
After completing the go-around, the crew carried out a second approach to the same runway, landing without further incident.
No injuries occurred among the 80 occupants, the safety board says, but the jet suffered scrape damage to the left wing-tip and outer leading-edge slat.
It identifies the airframe involved as C-FKJZ.
Owing to the rear-mounted engine design, CRJ900s have short undercarriage assemblies and sit low. The wing-tip underside is only about 1.9m above ground when parked.
