KLM’s cargo activities will be relocated from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol’s “Schiphol Centre” to the cargo area on the other side of the Kaagbaan runway.
The KLM buildings will move from Schiphol’s multi-purpose business and terminal hub to the soon to be developed “Vracht 15” cargo facility in the southeast area of the airport.
“Here, a modern, centrally organised and easily accessible cargo area will emerge, with more space for efficiency, good working conditions and sustainable solutions,” said Schiphol.
The recent agreement between Schiphol Airport and KLM forms part of the Schiphol Centre Master Plan, which sets out how the airport will sustainably develop over the next 25 years.
Now that this agreement has been signed, the design phase for the new cargo building will begin. The tender for architects is currently ongoing, said Schiphol.
With this agreement to move KLM’s cargo activities, Schiphol said that space will be created for new aircraft stands to accommodate larger, wider aircraft.
The airport said the move will also make way for the development of the new Terminal South, which is designed to meet demand for the growing number of passengers using the airport.
As part of the agreement, KLM’s catering activities will also be relocated to Schiphol North.
Schiphol has been engaged in ongoing discussions with the Dutch government over the number of flights at the airport in recent years.
The government wanted to limit the number of flights to lower noise pollution, however in March this year, the Dutch Supreme Court blocked the move.
