Avflight, an operator with a network of full-service FBOs across North America and Europe, has been a known fuel-and-go entity in Traverse City for more than a decade. On June 23, it took that position to the next level: a 6,000-square-foot FBO at Cherry Capital Airport (TVC). It’s the first ground-up terminal the company has built and a strong signal that transient Northern Michigan has a new competitive option. The facility puts its best foot forward with a lounge, conference room, sleeping rooms and a freezer full of Moomers ice cream, something only a Northern Michigan operator could come up with. Guests are entitled to access eight existing hangars that can accommodate an aircraft as large as a Gulfstream G700. Avflight plans to add six built-to-suit private box hangars for long-term storage. “We’re proud to open the doors to a facility that is uniquely Northern Michigan,” said Joe Meszaros, Avflight senior VP of operations. “From the design and amenities to the exceptional service our team provides, every detail was thoughtfully considered to create a memorable experience for guests. This investment reflects our commitment to the Traverse City community and our excitement for the future of aviation at Cherry Capital Airport.” For owners, operators, and brokers working in Northern Michigan, the additional long-term hangar space changes the landscape. A fuel stop is a transaction while a based aircraft is a relationship. Add the six built-to-suit box hangars and Avflight is making it clear it means business. If they fill, Cherry Capital’s reputation as a seasonal convenience may evolve into a viable home base. Northern Michigan’s demand is famously seasonal, and a dedicated FBO and its hangars only pay off if owners want a year-round presence in a market that quiets down after the leaves turn. Avflight’s bet is that there’s more fruit to bear out of this cherry tree.
