The Ford Bronco could be gaining some new members.
A pick-up truck based on the Detroit giant’s beloved off-roader could be on the way, according to Automotive News. But that’s not the only new iteration that the automaker is exploring: A hybrid variant and luxury version could also be in the works.
There’s so much love for the Bronco today that it’s easy to forget that there was no room for the 4×4 in the Ford lineup between 1997 and 2020. But since making its comeback earlier this decade, the SUV and its smaller sibling, the Bronco Sport, have both been a success by basically any metric. Since 2022, the first full year that both models were put in production, the auto giant has sold at least roughly 120,000 examples of each per year. It’s currently on pace to surpass that figure this year, with 90,000 Broncos and 71,000 Bronco Sports sold through July. Because of this, it’s little surprise that Ford is looking to wring a little more money out of the nameplate.
The 2027 Ford Bronco Filson could just be the first luxury version of the legendary 4×4.
The potential new Bronco garnering the most headlines so far is the rumored truck that would be the Blue Oval’s counterpoint to the Jeep Gladiator. Automotive News’ report is light on details about the model but suggests the variant will be based on the standard Bronco and could arrive by the end of the decade. This isn’t the first time there’s been talk of a Bronco pickup, and, as Car and Driver points out, there was even some thought it would arrive in the first half this decade. The weekly newspaper also reports a hybrid variant is on its way, too. The partially electrified 4×4 could arrive as soon as next year as a 2028 model.
Even more intriguing is the suggestion that a luxury version of the SUV may also be in the works. The same day that Automotive News published its report, the Detroit Free Press ran a story about a Lincoln-badged Bronco that would reportedly offer premium features to rival the Mercedes G-Class at a significantly lower cost. The newspaper claims that pricing for the luxe 4×4 would begin around $70,000, which is less than half the starting price of the iconic G-Wagen.
When reached for comment on Thursday, a representative for Ford told Robb Report: “We are not going to comment on future product speculation, much of which is inaccurate. What we can say is Ford is focused on delivering a massive product renewal that will refresh 80% of our North American portfolio by volume by 2029. This includes the all-new Ford Fathom midsize pickup on the new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, alongside the next-generation F-150 and F-Series Super Duty.”
It remains to be seen if Ford will end up building any of the potential new Broncos, but it’s clear that it has big plans for the nameplate. There’s already talk that the automaker may spin the F-Series and Mustang off as their own sub-brands, and it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see it do the same with the Bronco.
