Air traffic control audio released by VASAviation captures the moment a Delta Air Lines flight crew declared a medical emergency after the aircraft’s captain fell severely ill in the cockpit.
DETROIT — The flight, Delta 437, was on its approach into Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) when the crew contacted air traffic control (ATC) to declare an emergency. While in-flight medical emergencies involving pilots typically prompt the first officer to immediately take sole control and request priority assistance, the captain himself personally stepped onto the radio frequency to brief controllers on his condition and plans for the landing.
Radio Transmission Details
According to the recorded air traffic communications, controllers checked in with Delta 437 regarding their status, asking whether they were dealing with adverse weather conditions or mechanical issues. The crew clarified that the issue was a medical emergency.
As the Boeing 757 was cleared for a visual approach to Runway 22 Left, the captain directly transmitted his status to Detroit Approach:
“Detroit, this is the captain. I’m the one that’s very ill. Our plan is to land, and I’m going to taxi the jet to the gate, but I need to go to the hospital.”
Approach controllers acknowledged the request and handed the aircraft off to Metro Tower. Upon switching frequencies, the captain repeated his intent to remain on duty through the landing and taxi phase, requesting immediate medical transport upon arrival at the gate.
Arrival and Gate Confusion
Following a smooth landing on Runway 22 Left, controllers instructed Delta 437 to exit the runway via Taxiway Yankee 2 for the quickest route to the terminal area.
During the taxi, brief confusion arose regarding their destination gate. Company dispatch initially updated the flight crew’s gate assignment to Alpha 13. Controllers quickly pointed out that a Boeing 757 could not fit into that specific gate slot. The crew confirmed they would stick to their original assignment at Gate Alpha 10, where emergency medical personnel and ground crews were already stationed and waiting.
