Agreement will take total number of twinjets for Russian flag operator into triple figures.
Russian operator Aeroflot Group has signed for 90 Yakovlev MC-21-310s, with deliveries set to commence in 2029.
The twinjets will be powered by Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines.
Aeroflot signed the agreement in Moscow on 18 September, in the presence of figures including Russian president Vladimir Putin.
It states that the deliveries will run to 2032.
Aeroflot adds that the contract – signed with United Aircraft, United Engine and lessor Aviakapital-Servis – covers the MC-21s, training, and aftersales for 22 years.
Industry and trade minister Anton Alikhanov, who also attended the signing ceremony, says the aircraft “will be certified next year”.
Aeroflot is already due to receive an initial batch of 18 MC-21s over the course of 2027-28, under a previous contract signed in 2023.
The deal for the additional 90 aircraft will include technical support for all 108 in the group’s fleet.
The MC-21-310 underwent redevelopment to feature a greater proportion of Russian-sourced equipment after international sanctions cut off access to Western components.
Some 80 systems were created as part of this import-substitution effort.
Aeroflot chief Sergei Aleksandrovsky says the contract “significantly determines the future of Russian aircraft manufacturing”.
“This applies not only to aircraft production,” he says. “We and our partners will build the most effective aftersales service system for Russian airliners.”
Aeroflot says the contract documents clearly define the parties’ obligations in terms of delivery, leasing and technical support.
It has not specified the configuration of the jets, which are designed for around 211 passengers.
“The contract with Aeroflot ensures a clear workload for years to come and creates the foundation for a systematic expansion of serial production,” says state technology firm Rostec’s chief, Sergei Chemezov.
United Aircraft head Vadim Badekha adds that the company is “confident” that the MC-21 will become “a true flagship of Russian civil aviation”.
