Brisbane Airport has secured Costco’s first warehouse in Brisbane, with the retailer set to anchor a new 51-hectare mixed-use precinct opposite the airport’s International Terminal.
The Costco warehouse will occupy a 6.7-hectare site, including a 15,600m2 store and fuel station, and is scheduled to open in late 2029. It will be the retailer’s first location in Brisbane City and its fourth in Queensland.
The site sits directly across from the International Terminal and is more than three times the size of South Bank Parklands, according to Brisbane Airport. Perimeter drainage works have begun, and road network upgrades will accompany the development. Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said Costco would help draw activity to the new precinct.
“Costco’s commitment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Brisbane Airport and is the first of many announcements to come as we bring to life a new mixed-use precinct for the city,” de Graaff said. “Costco is just the beginning. Even a retailer of this scale will occupy only 12% of this huge development site, leaving significant opportunities for other businesses to establish themselves alongside one of the world’s most recognised retail brands.”
Costco country manager for Australia and New Zealand, Chris Tingman, said the warehouse represents an investment of more than AU$145 million (US$104m) in retail development.
“It is great news for our members across Brisbane. This is a dynamic and fast-growing region, and we look forward to bringing even greater value to members through our wide range of products and services,” Tingman said. “With over 900 sites worldwide and 15 other warehouses across the country, I am confident the community will benefit from the unique shopping experience Costco offers.”
The warehouse will include 870 parking spaces and a fuel station with 34 bowsers, and is expected to employ approximately 250 full-time staff once complete.
The site is located 12 kilometers from Brisbane’s central business district and connects directly to South East Queensland’s road network. Its development forms part of Brisbane Airport’s broader $5 billion (US$3.6 billion) Future BNE transformation program.
