The use of rescue hoists in disaster situations, international experience reports, and current developments in hoist operations were the focus of DRF Air Rescue’s fifth International Hoist Symposium. Around 130 experts from all over the world used the event to exchange ideas on challenges, best practices, and the main topic, “Next Gen Hoist”. The lecture programme was complemented by a trade exhibition that provided insights into current technical developments and innovations.
Sebastian Schneider, Head of Hoist Operations Training and organiser of the symposium, said: “Especially in disaster situations, such as the flooding catastrophe in the Ahr Valley in 2021, the use of a hoist can be life-saving. In cases of extensive destruction and highly dynamic situations, there is often no suitable landing site. The use of a hoist allows people to be reached quickly, provided with medical care, and brought to safety.”
When planning this year’s symposium, the organisers considered it important to present different perspectives on the use of hoists in disaster situations, particularly regarding organisational challenges. Other lecture topics included general issues of disaster management and the efficient deployment of available rescue resources, current developments in crew training, and mountain rescue operations.
Detailed insights into real-life operational scenarios were also a key pillar of the lecture programme, said Schneider, adding: “We are pleased that, through this professional exchange of experience, we were once again able to offer an important component of the HHO Symposium this year. The willingness of all speakers and participants to share their extensive expertise and knowledge is one of the event’s greatest strengths.”
Working together to advance hoist operations
The exchange of real operational scenarios, proven procedures, and new approache
s provides valuable perspectives for the further development of hoist operations and helps to improve safety and efficiency.
Jörg Redetzky, Head of Specific Approvals and IFR at DRF Luftrettung, said: “This year’s symposium, now in its fifth edition, has proven that we have successfully established a European platform for hoist operations. The positive feedback from our participants shows us that we are all pulling together to make hoist operations even safer and more efficient. Our sincere thanks go to our sponsors Vincorion, Onboard Systems, reel, Airbus, Axnes, Bucher, Priority 1 Air Rescue, and Reiser Simulation and Training. We are determined to continue the symposium in the years to come.”
