Heathrow Airport’s planned third runway expansion is expected to generate more than 108,000 jobs across every UK nation and region, spanning construction, engineering and apprenticeship opportunities for young people, according to the airport operator.
The expansion, which Heathrow says will be entirely privately financed with no cost to taxpayers, is being positioned as a national project drawing on supply chains throughout the country.
The jobs figures were released as the UK government’s consultation on the draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement closed and the Transport Committee began its opening inquiry evidence sessions.
According to Heathrow, expansion will boost skills and unlock billions of pounds in additional private investment across UK supply chains, with industries including British steel manufacturing set to benefit. The project has backing from UK Steel and trade unions GMB, Unite and Community.
Heathrow describes itself as the UK’s only hub airport and its largest port by value, arguing that its current capacity constraints are hindering the country’s competitiveness in reaching global markets and attracting investment and visitors.
Once operational, a third runway would raise Heathrow’s capacity to up to 756,000 flights and 150 million passengers annually, the airport said, along with new terminal facilities and more reliable journeys. Heathrow said the additional 50% capacity would increase competition among airlines and give passengers greater choice, making travel more affordable.
Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said, “We want to support the government’s ambition to deliver ‘good growth in every postcode’ and unlock what’s been holding this country back, including finally clearing the path for Heathrow expansion to take off. We are ready to show that private investment can work alongside government to revitalize British industry and create long-lasting, high-quality jobs and opportunities for people across the country.”
