Die Macchi C.200 Saetta (Blitz) entstand Ende der 1930er-Jahre als wendiger Jäger der Regia Aeronautica. Aus ihr folgte die C.202 Folgore mit deutschem DB-601-Motor, schneller und kampfstärker, im Mittelmeer und über Italien stark eingesetzt. Die C.205 Veltro brachte noch mehr Leistung und Bewaffnung, kam 1943/44 gegen alliierte Bomber zum Einsatz, blieb jedoch selten.
