Liebherr has launched a new version of its four axle MK88-4.1E hybrid/electric powered mobile self-erecting tower crane, the MK 88-4.2E.

Most of the MK 88-4.2E’s superstructure, including mast/tower and jib, is the same as on the current model, although the counterweight has been redesigned. The 4.1’s optional two tonne additional counterweight is now standard on the 4.2, while an optional five piece counterweight is available to help meet tougher road regulations. It is said to be easy to remove either partially or fully, with an optional hydraulic self-install system.

The installation or removal can be done electrically, either by plugging in or using the on-board battery pack.
Plug-in connections for the superstructure include 16, 32 and 63 Amp options, with an “intelligent, flexible energy management system” combined with fully electric function drives. A battery pack is recharged/maintained when plugged in or can be kept topped up on site or when travelling, between jobs, using the onboard generator.

The lifting performance is identical to the current unit with a maximum capacity of eight tonnes, while it can handle 2.2 tonnes at its maximum radius of 45 metres with an under hook height of 30.2 metres. The crane can also operate with the jib luffed at 15, 30 or 45 degrees above horizontal for a maximum under hook height of 59.1 metres with a capacity of 1,850kg. The ‘Intelligent Load Plus’ control system enables automatic capacity increases of up to 10 percent.
Where the new crane differs most is the chassis, the new model is, according to the company, able to meet road regulations in most jurisdictions, with regular axle loads of 10 or 12 tonnes, but it can also be configured with axle loads of under 9.2 tonnes and a gross vehicle weight below 36.3 tonnes, thanks to the new four part counterweight and outrigger beams that are also easily removed and reinstalled.
The crane is equipped with wider 445/75 R22.5 tyres on aluminium wheel rims, which will help in markets such as Australia, Denmark and the USA. Three of the axles are driven, while all four steer – 8x6x8.
The MK 88-4.2 has an overall width of 2.75 metres, an overall length of 15.95 metres and a variable outrigger spread of up to seven metres.
Shipment of final production machines is expected to get underway in the second quarter of next year.
