Salus Aviation has announced the launch of a new scholarship programme designed to support the next generation of aviation engineers while honouring three individuals whose dedication, expertise and leadership have helped shape the company and the wider aviation industry.
The new programme will offer three annual scholarships to students enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Workplace Introductory Skills) Level 4 programme at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).
A company spokesperson said: “Each scholarship will be awarded in the name of one of Salus Aviation’s founding legends: David Rye, Propeller Engineer, Hamilton; Ian Frazer, Chief Engineer – Overhaul, Ardmore; and Jeff O’Sullivan, Technical Support Manager – Helicopters, Ardmore.
“David, Ian and Jeff are widely respected throughout the industry for their technical knowledge, leadership and commitment to sharing their expertise with others. Through mentoring apprentices, supporting engineering teams and contributing to the development of industry capability, each has played an important role in helping strengthen New Zealand aviation.
“In addition, for decades, they have played pivotal roles in the growth and success of the business, contributing not only their technical expertise but also their passion for the aviation industry. Their careers have been defined by professionalism, innovation, craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”
As well as receiving the scholarship, the recipients will be offered the first opportunity to undertake a six-week work placement with Salus Aviation, providing valuable hands-on industry experience and exposure to one of New Zealand’s leading aviation organisations.
Greg Edmonds, Chief Executive Officer of Salus Aviation, said: “These scholarships recognise three remarkable individuals whose contributions have left an enduring legacy within our business and the aviation industry. David, Ian and Jeff have each dedicated their careers to developing people, maintaining the highest engineering standards and helping build the industry we know today. It is fitting that their names will continue to inspire future generations of aviation engineers as they begin their own journeys.”
The scholarship programme has been developed in partnership with NMIT and aims to encourage and support students pursuing a career in aeronautical engineering at a time when the aviation industry continues to face a growing demand for skilled technical professionals.
The scholarships form part of Salus Aviation’s broader commitment to workforce development, apprenticeships and technical training, ensuring the industry continues to attract and develop highly skilled aviation professionals for the future.
Kate Neame, NMIT’s Director Strategy and Engagement, said: “We’re excited to partner with Salus Aviation on these scholarships, which will help support talented ākonga (learners) pursuing careers in aeronautical engineering. Alongside the financial support for our learners, the six-week industry placement with Salus Aviation will give them valuable real-world experience and help them develop the skills, confidence and industry connections they need to be work-ready when they complete their programme. Partnerships like this are incredibly important because they connect learning with industry, helping ensure our graduates are well prepared to step into the workforce and contribute to New Zealand’s aviation sector.”
