A Croatia Airlines Airbus A220-300 suffered a runway excursion on Saturday after the crew aborted take-off at Split Airport in Croatia.
The aircraft, registered 9A-CAN, was operating flight OU412 to Frankfurt when it departed the paved surface during the take-off roll and stopped partly on the grass beside runway 23.
Split Airport official Mate Melvan told local media the aircraft veered off the runway for reasons that remain unclear.
“During the aborted take-off, after braking, one of the aircraft’s landing-gear wheels came off the asphalt surface of the runway,” the Croatian AIN agency said.
Passengers were evacuated after the aircraft came to a stop and no injuries were reported.
Images and videos circulating on social media appear to show the aircraft with reverse thrust deployed before leaving the runway surface. The footage also suggests the left Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engine may have struck an airfield sign during the excursion.
Croatia Airlines said the crew stopped the aircraft safely following emergency procedures. All 132 passengers and five crew members evacuated normally and no injuries were reported.
Airport teams later began work to remove the aircraft from the runway area.
The A220 involved in the incident was delivered less than a year ago as part of Croatia Airlines’ ongoing fleet renewal centered on the Airbus narrowbody family.
