SINGAPORE—Air Cambodia has placed an order for 20 Comac C909 regional jets, becoming the first international flag carrier to commit to the Chinese-built aircraft.
The announcement was made on the sidelines of the World AI Conference, attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and reported in Chinese state media outlets. The C909 order follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Air Cambodia and Comac last September for the regional jets.
Separately, Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) and Comac signed an MOU on strategic cooperation in civil aviation. The pact covers aviation technology transfer, human resource development, airport development and maintenance, as well as technical support.
Air Cambodia is 30% owned by the Cambodian government. Vietnam Airlines holds a 14% stake and the remaining shares are owned by China’s Henan Airport Investment Group and Hong Kong’s 7Trip International Co.
According to Aviation Week Fleet Discovery data, Air Cambodia operates three Airbus A320s and three ATR 72-600s, while also holding orders for 10 Boeing 737-8s.
CAPA data show that China accounts for 32.1% of Air Cambodia’s seat capacity, underscoring the importance of the Chinese market to Cambodia’s tourism industry and broader economy.
