Asia now has two Global 8000s, and barely two weeks separate them. Bombardier confirmed today that it has delivered the ultra-long-range jet to a customer in Shanghai, eleven days after Hong Kong’s Metrojet placed the region’s first into managed-fleet service on June 12. When you think of financial capitals, Shanghai and Hong Kong sit near the top of everyone’s list, and among the longest hauls to Western markets. The ability to fly nonstop to New York or Sydney is a mission spec tailor-made for this region. A Mach 0.85 long-range cruise stretches to 8,000 nautical miles, and a Mach 0.95 top speed makes it the fastest civil jet flying. Most boxes are checked. And while two deliveries do not move a market, this is a trend worth monitoring. The 8000 has now reached customers across North America, the Gulf, and East Asia, confirming that ultra-long-range demand is there. NetJets took the first aircraft. Comlux and Gulf Wings await the delivery of theirs. The 8000 is the shiny new object in the market, and with every delivery, the pre-owned marketplace effect should be noted. Every buyer stepping up into a new 8000 is a buyer who is no longer bidding on a used Global 6000, 6500, or 7500. According to Bombardier, it is ramping toward roughly 40 Global-family aircraft deliveries per year, and a record company backlog is attributed in part to Global 8000 demand. As production climbs and the type spreads through Asia-Pacific, owners holding used 6000s, 6500s, and 7500s may find buyers harder to keep and pricing harder to defend.
