The Spanish companies plan to combine Basquevolt’s lithium metal cells, which exceed 400 Wh/kg, with Battera’s pack integration, and they are targeting series production in 2027.
Basquevolt and Battera Technologies announced in October 2026 a strategic roadmap to jointly develop and deliver integrated battery solutions for aerospace applications. Both companies are based in Spain. The partnership targets aerospace platforms that require the highest levels of energy density, safety and reliability, along with European sourcing.
The collaboration brings together two complementary capabilities. Vitoria-Gasteiz-based Basquevolt designs and manufactures next-generation electrolyte and lithium metal cells. According to the company, those cells already deliver energy densities above 400 Wh/kg, well beyond those of commercial lithium-ion cells. Meanwhile, Battera, based in Irun, develops, manufactures and industrializes battery systems and has experience in demanding aerospace programs.
“This collaboration marks a pivotal step in Basquevolt’s strategy to deploy our technology in the highest-value applications where energy density is not a convenience but a critical requirement,” said Pablo Fernández Santos, managing director of Basquevolt. “Battera brings its expertise in battery pack development, manufacturing and integration, enabling high-energy-density solutions with rapid industrialisation and scalable production. Together, we are building something that does not yet exist at scale in Europe.”
Lithium metal batteries for aerospace: the roadmap
Building on Basquevolt’s current cell performance, the companies are targeting more than 500 Wh/kg in the coming months. They say that threshold would put their joint solution ahead of any commercially available advanced battery system.
From the outset, however, the partnership focuses on industrial-scale production rather than research alone. The companies have agreed on a phased industrialization roadmap, with series production of integrated battery solutions targeted for 2027. They plan to anchor the full value chain in Europe, from electrolyte and cell manufacturing to pack integration and system delivery. As a result, both companies expect the product to carry the highest European content of any comparable high-performance battery solution on the market.
“At Battera, we believe that developing advanced battery solutions requires close collaboration between cell development and battery manufacturing from the start,” said Javier Llamazares, managing director of Battera Technologies. “Through this partnership, Basquevolt’s advanced lithium metal technology and cell manufacturing capabilities, together with Battera’s experience in battery pack development and manufacturing, will allow us to deliver batteries with high energy density, tailored to the needs of aerial platforms, with production capabilities and scalability not currently available in Europe.”
Company backgrounds
Founded in 2022, Basquevolt has its headquarters at the Álava Technology Park. The European Innovation Council’s EIC Accelerator and industrial investors back the company. Its proprietary solid-state electrolyte is cathode-agnostic and compatible with existing lithium-ion manufacturing infrastructure. Basquevolt has active joint development agreements with European automotive OEMs, including Renault Group, along with collaborations in aerospace, high-altitude pseudo-satellites (HAPS) and stationary storage. Battera develops battery systems for aerospace and other mobility applications, with a focus on industrial-scale production and rapid industrialization.
