The need for emergency maintenance on the air traffic control tower at King County International Airport-Boeing Field (KBFI) in Seattle means several weeks of reduced operational capacity for the busy facility.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration air traffic facilities are required to have contingency plans for service losses that can occur. It took approximately 48 hours to ensure all controllers at BFI were familiar and trained to operate from the mobile facility.
