A penthouse in Mallorca’s Old Town feels less like a historic apartment frozen in time and more like the dream crash pad of a design-obsessed art collector who never met a Panton chair or a beanbag he didn’t love. Perched atop a 16th-century palace in Palma’s La Calatrava neighborhood, the newly renovated residence somehow balances medieval character with a playful space-age sensibility—in all the best ways.
The three-bedroom abode sits among winding cobblestone streets and centuries-old churches, but inside, things take a delightfully weird turn. Glossy sculptural chairs mingle with chunky lounge pieces, stainless steel artwork, glowing accent lighting, and enough conversation-starting decor to make the place feel like a boutique hotel crossed with a very stylish bachelor pad. And somehow, it all comes together effortlessly.

The roughly 2,200-square-foot apartment was overhauled four years ago by owner Dieter Castenow, according to Mansion Global. The renovation leaned into using local materials while creating a series of dramatic architectural moments. Mallorcan sandstone appears throughout, including on the enormous kitchen island, which reportedly weighed nearly two tons and required eight people to install. Off the kitchen and dining area, a lounge sits beneath a dramatic glass roof that slides open at the push of a button, while another sitting area just outside the primary bedroom features a bulbous fireplace suspended from the ceiling, a sculptural counterpoint to all the steel and exposed stone surfaces.
Then there’s the rooftop terrace. Measuring about 900 square feet, the sprawling perch looks out over Palma’s historic rooftops all the way to the sea. A tiny tower room—once used by merchants to watch for incoming ships centuries ago—now feels more like the ideal spot for a sunset cocktail.

A wine cellar and tasting area with a barrel-vaulted stone ceiling adds yet another layer of old-world character, where Castenow has hosted wine, olive oil, and jamón tastings with friends. Nearby, a fitness room outfitted with sleek wooden equipment feels far more design-forward than the average home gym.
Even the extras are wonderfully eccentric. The sale includes a Smart car, two electric bikes, much of the furniture, select artworks, and a separate two-bedroom, one-bath guest apartment. The penthouse is listed for3.5 million euros (about $4.1 million) with Julia Campos of Engel & Völkers Palma Centre.
