Mit Italiens Kriegseintritt im Juni 1940 taten sich auf dem Balkan und in Nordafrika neue Kriegsschauplätze auf. Besondere Bedeutung kam dabei der geostrategisch günstig gelegenen Mittelmeerinsel Malta zu. Anfang 1941 begannen auch deutsche Luftwaffenverbände in das Kampfgeschehen um Malta einzugreifen.
