SHINING 3D Metrology held a webinar titled “New Product Members of SHINING 3D Metrology” on September 9, introducing three upgraded 3D scanning systems and discussing how manufacturers can select a scanning solution based on four representative production scenarios. The session is framed around specific application challenges rather than a straightforward specification comparison.
Three Upgraded Scanners
FreeScan Combo+ Wireless follows the earlier FreeScan Combo Series, retaining its compact, lightweight design and dual light sources. The new version adds a wireless operating mode and an updated scanning engine, and is intended for automotive sheet metal inspection.
FreeScan Trak Nova+ builds on the original FreeScan Trak Nova, combining dynamic tracking with handheld scanning. SHINING 3D lists a scanning rate of up to 7.6 million points per second along with multiple laser scanning modes. The company plans to demonstrate the system’s use in server manufacturing and inspection during the webinar.
FreeScan Trak ProW+ extends the large-scale scanning range of the FreeScan Trak ProW Series, with a revised scanner structure and an updated power setup. SHINING 3D positions the system for automated inspection in automotive manufacturing.
Matching Scanners to Manufacturing Scenarios
The webinar organizes its content around four scenarios: automotive sheet metal inspection with the FreeScan Combo+ Wireless, server manufacturing inspection with the FreeScan Trak Nova+, large-scale automotive inspection with the FreeScan Trak ProW+, and precision component measurement with the OptimScan Q Series. SHINING 3D states that the right choice of scanner depends on factors including application size and complexity, measurement requirements, inspection environment, and production workflow.
The session will include product introductions, application demonstrations, customer accounts, and a live Q&A with SHINING 3D Metrology staff.
How Other Scanner Makers Frame Upgrades Around Named Applications
SHINING 3D Metrology’s refresh is built around a strategy of tying each hardware upgrade to a named production scenario, automotive sheet metal, server manufacturing, large-scale automotive inspection, and precision components, rather than marketing the upgrades on specifications alone.
Hexagon took a comparable approach when it launched the HYPERSCAN scanner, positioning the system for automotive, aerospace, energy, and precision manufacturing work involving large installed components that cannot be moved to a fixed coordinate measuring machine. The two differ in scope: HYPERSCAN is framed around a single technical constraint, reference-target setup delays, that spans multiple sectors, rather than four discrete scenarios each mapped to one model.
Revopoint followed a related pattern when it launched the MetroY Ultra and POP 4 together, aiming MetroY Ultra at quality control engineers and reverse engineers needing verified, measurement-ready data, and POP 4 at everyday scanning of both small indoor objects and larger outdoor workpieces. Where SHINING 3D splits its lineup by named industrial setting, Revopoint splits by audience and scanning intensity instead.
Both examples reflect a market moving away from spec-first scanner launches and toward use-defined ones.
