A quiet, leafy stretch of the English countryside isn’t the obvious setting for a major international automotive deal—but that’s reportedly what took place inside this historic residence just outside London. According to the home’s lore, it was right here in the drawing room where the Ford Motor Company’’s deal to acquire Aston Martin was agreed to—hardly a typical country house anecdote.
Known as Battlecrease Hall, the Grade II–listed property in Shepperton was once owned by Walter Hayes, the longtime Ford executive credited with helping guide Aston Martin through a pivotal period, playing a key role in reviving the storied British marque during financial difficulty.
The house’s history had a flair for intrigue long before its automotive moment. In the late 18th century, it is believed to have served as a discreet meeting place for Horatio Nelson and his mistress, Emma Hamilton. Their relationship was headline-making, and the property offered a quiet escape from London, with Hamilton said to have rented it as a weekend retreat.

The property’s origins actually stretch back to the 17th century and may even intersect with the English Civil War. Local lore holds that Cavalier prisoners were once held in its cellars, while a still-standing mulberry tree in the garden is believed to date to that period—it’s said to have been planted at the direction of Charles I.
A Georgian façade added in the 18th century lends the home the symmetry it retains today. In the 19th century, it was owned by Henry Rider Haggard, best known for King Solomon’s Mines, who bought the house for his sisters. By the early 20th century, it had briefly been repurposed as a rehabilitation facility before eventually returning to being a home.

The kitchen centers on a classic AGA range.

Today, it is both a historic showpiece and a comfortable family home. The roughly 4,400-square-foot layout includes formal rooms with fireplaces, original shutters, and detailed cornicing, while the rear opens into a more relaxed kitchen centered around an AGA range and an orangery-style dining space that spills out to the garden.
There are six bedrooms across two floors, including a primary suite with views toward Walton Bridge, plus a converted coach house that now works as a studio, office, or potential guest space.

The home opens to a walled garden with a heated swimming pool.

Outside, the walled garden is a standout, with a heated pool, multiple areas for dining and lounging, and a working kitchen garden wrapped around that centuries-old mulberry tree.
The setting adds to the appeal. The River Thames is moments away, and nearby Shepperton Studios has long drawn film and TV productions to the area. The house itself has been used for commercial shoots, including campaigns for brands like ASOS and Diageo. Now fully restored, Battlecrease Hall is on the market with Blue Book Agency for 2.95 million pounds (about $4 million).
