North Dakota Representative Liz Conmy was killed after a Beechcraft Debonair 33 crashed near the Crystal Airport (MIC) on Saturday.
The aircraft crashed at around 11:51 a.m. into a public park shortly after attempting to take off, according to ABC News. Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesperson Jeff Lea said the BE33 was unable to get up in the air, which caused the crash. The single-engine caught fire immediately after the crash. The plane’s two occupants did not survive, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
“We are completely heartbroken and gutted by the loss of Representative Liz Conmy. Her death is a profound loss for our state,” said the North Dakota Democratic-Nonpartisan League Party on X. “As a lawmaker, she championed public education, the environment, and transparency.”
The FAA said in a statement that two people were aboard. Senator Tim Mathern said Conmy had a good friend who is a pilot, with whom she had been flying for the past year and a half. The pilot remains unidentified to the public as investigations are underway.
